Our English 311 class participated in the service learning project with Big Brothers Big Sisters organization during this fall 2012 semester. The service learning project consisted of class splitting up into seven different groups, assigned to conduct and organize a proposal to present to the Big Brother Big Sister organization. The goals of the assignment was to construct a plan to increase awareness of the organization and also show how a little dedication, creativity and ambition can produce a huge impact on the audiences presence. My favorite group out of the entire class was the Book Crew. The Book Crew was one of my particular groups in which our duty was to gain all information needed out of several unused books occupying space in the Big Brother Big Sister organization, and to come up with ideas on how to utilize them effectively with the big and little sisters and brothers.
Ideas that I now wish my group would have incorporated into our project was the function of the office and space being occupied by the books, proposing it can be used as an commercial office, or possibly a service office where the Big Brother Big Sister organization can make money. If the Big Brother Big Sister organization came into collaboration with another company or came in partnership with another company or organization that had similar or concrete goals purposes or values, could produce great business together. Maybe a daycare and or after school program like Bridges, could partnership to keep children busy all throughout the week and weekend, to keep their minds functioning and positive. Mostly and ultimately the future would hold a beautiful and innovative generation.
In experience to creating and preparing my group presentation, I gained a lot new strategies to developing an understanding of the people I work with and for. By completing my sociology course this semester as well, I was able to implement different knowledge from different perspectives throughout my life. I know that working with groups and diverse groups is essential to experience before working in a real career in everyday situations when you have to step out of your comfort zone and pay more attention than usual in an individual office or classroom setting.

Attention: Frederick Morley, Director of Academic Services
Subject: Termination of teacher’s services

Due to a huge misunderstanding and many misinterpretations of Ms. Hatcher’s teaching services and abilities in her math classes this semester, it has been decided to terminate her from teaching at our campus. I am in total upset with this action because I have not experienced anything but hard-working, dedication, assistance, patience; time, dignity, and humanity come from this woman in my entire knowing of her.

I have attended Davenport University for nearly a year and a half. While attending here I have gained a lot of acquired skills and materials that are detrimental to have for our future and professional world. Also while attending Davenport University, I have also gained a lot of experience and capability on how to study, volunteer my services, and practice what I learn every day. Firing Ms. Hatcher would make a negative alteration in our campus and math department. Other students and staff that feel the same way I do would agree to this. I respect Ms. Hatcher because all she wants and desires is for her students to learn, grow and do right. Please kindly do not fire Ms. Hatcher, which would daunt my endurance to continuing my education here at Davenport University.

In the near future I plan on attending this college because I love Davenport University’s programs, services and school as a whole. If I could improve my campus in any way, type or form, it’d be to keep Ms. Hatcher employed here as a math teacher. I have only had her once as an instructor, but plans to be another one of her servicing students in a higher course in the near future.

Please let me know how the college feels in regards to improvement for the Flint campus’s services and future students.

Yours Truly,

Ayana Boone

Thanksgiving is a time of year that has always been my favorite. Thanksgiving holiday is a time when happiness, thanks and giving is shared within your families or communities. This season and fall time of year is my favorite time of year; the colored leaves falling off the trees, the time too sip hot chocolate , walks down the river and festivities in the community all share the brightness and happiness of the holidays and season. Christmas is a holiday that is also my favorite time of the year because it does have a significant meaning of Jesus's birthday, but also because of the times and happiness that you can spend with your families and loved ones.

Service-learning is a structured learning experience that combines community service with preparation and reflection. Students engaged in service-learning provide community service in response to community-identified concerns and learn about the context in which service is provided, the connection between their service and their academic coursework, and their roles as citizens. Service-learning differs from traditional clinical education in the health professions in that service-learning strives to achieve a balance between service and learning objectives - in service-learning, partners must negotiate the differences in their needs and expectations.Service-learning places an emphasis on addressing community concerns and broad determinants of health. In service-learning, there is the integral involvement of community partners - service-learning involves a principle-centered partnership between communities and health professions schools. Service-learning emphasizes reciprocal learning - In service-learning, traditional definitions of "faculty," "teacher" and "learner" are intentionally blurred. We all learn from each other. Service-learning emphasizes reflective practice - In service-learning, reflection facilitates the connection between practice and theory and fosters critical thinking.Service-learning places and emphasis on developing citizenship skills and achieving social change - many factors influence health and quality of life. The provision of health services is not often the most important factor. In service-learning, students place their roles as health professionals and citizens in a larger societal context. Service-learning offers a unique opportunity for America's young people -- from kindergarten to college students -- to get involved with their communities in a tangible way by integrating service projects with classroom learning. Service-learning engages students in the educational process, using what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life problems.  Students not only learn about democracy and citizenship, they become actively contributing citizens and community members through the service they perform. I expect to gain every opportunity I can that’s beneficial from service learning by implementing all educational tactics and devices I've learned, which will travel and carry along with me wherever my future takes in me in any position and company or organization.

I have decided to research for a set of instructions on how to assemble something in at least two different languages. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful at finding that one set of instructions over the entire internet with at least two languages presenting the whole text. What I did find that seemed so very odd but obvious about the documents of instructions, were titled and noted indications near the headings of the document being in ‘English’. Anyone who attempts to read anything first notices that the text is they’re language or not. This indicated to me after noticing several times, foreigners must have written and distributed these products and instructions to manufacturers. I believed the U.S. manufacturers translate and indicate them for the ‘English’ people of the U.S. to be eligible to read them. As time is continually moving and changing, I seem to realize how not only technology, but how the many advancements, improvements and innovations are creating a more industrious result and outcome to the world and people; like ‘English-ready instructions’. The most efficient dual- language set of instructions I found on the internet were for the exercise bike (http://support.startrac.com/documents/ownman/620-7694C.pdf), which only had ‘warnings’ and ‘safety precautions’ translated in a different language. These types of instructions should definitely be improved by having a translated version available in all other language as a separate document or on the same one, not just the safety instructions available in another language. My question is, how does manufacturers expect 'all' customers to be efficient with assembling a product?

Do's & Dont's of Social Networking vs. Professional Networking

There are a lot of kinds of behaviors in the workplace and within the social networking spheres that are not professional and neither increases our credibility, which we should avoid. When in the workplace, you represent both yourself and your employer. You should always make sure that you are mindful of that fact at all times, doing so will design your decision making in a professional manner even without conscience. Doing things that will improve the way you are portrayed to people, will certainly increase your credibility and professionalism; turning off your cell phone, going easy on the perfume and cologne, taking appropriate breaks, chewing gum, having food and drinks at your desk, leaving your workout gear at home or in the car, having telephone etiquette, participating in office gossip, and having the respect of what is on your computer screen (Facebook, solitaire, e.g.). A good attitude and a sense of professionalism in the workplace can have a positive effect on customer service, employee morale and general productivity.
Do’s and don’ts for social and professional networking seem to be apparent and obvious to some people, but not everyone. Beginning to maintain a professional outlook on social networking should be by having a generally clean head shot of yourself as your photo. Being consistent and vigilant is challenging when making you a brand to suspect employers, but pays off. Update your profile regularly, don’t badmouth your current or previous employer, do join groups selectively, don’t mention your job search if you’re still employed, and don’t forget about ‘digital dirt’ from a picture, blog, and even your friends which employers can see too. Do’s and don’ts in professional networking should maintain calm and consistent. Do not forget have copies of your resumes; cover letters, business cards and or networking cards. Do join a professional organization related to your field and or achieve volunteer work. Do find a mentor, someone to help guide you, and come up with a system for organizing your network contacts. Do consider conducting informational interviews, the ultimate networking technique. Don’t forget to thank everyone in your network that has been helpful to you. Do keep networking even after you've found a job. Our reputation, character and status is very influential in most hiring processes. Any negative image of you portrays that you as a person isn't fit for the prospective position. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. should be professional and updated if networking with employers because all and any positive or negative interprets of you, will be reflected.

The role of constructive criticism in the workplace is a judgmental and evaluative message sent from the boss, manager or employee, to another employee. Constructive criticism is strict, informative, instruction given in need for improvement in error. Usually being a critic for improvement; a person who cares for the outcome of either someone else or each other. For instance, a waitress realizes they see another employee who needs help and improvement in a specific area of their work; smiling and greeting; which is a rewarding aspect to the job of communication and apparent to providing service to the customer. One day, the one waitress with more experience may say to the new server “you don’t need to come to work on my shift anymore if you’re going to walking around here looking like you’re kicking bricks!” So the girl says, “Well I’m not going to walk around here looking how you want me to look because I’m just here for the money." "Well frowning and looking down to the ground won’t get you tips, customers, and soon your job, especially if you keep acting like that," the old waiter said.

A time that I had to receive constructive criticism was when I was one day volunteering at the Hurley Medical center on the 9thfloor with the nurses for my high school senior exit presentation. As I had begun to learn a lot of skills needed for being a nurse, I soon realized that I was very happy that I had finally had the opportunity to be in the “hands- on zone” of them. I had always been fascinated and curious with the medical field, human body, and nurse job, and always grew up wanting to be one. As I was approached the end of my volunteer session at Hurley and earned more than required service hours, I was well well-informed, educated and experienced enough to realize the dedication needed to be a nurse. During my last few days volunteering, a nurse told to me that I would have to be able to grow more into caring for the job, rather than just doing the job. I was astonished as I hadn’t realized the aspect I told and showed her towards how I would be a nurse. It was not an easy cashier job where people are satisfied how fast they get service, but as oppose to how well and careful you approach and handle your job, which will always come out to a better outcome and result. If I ever become a nurse or welder, I would always handle and approach any job with care, attention and caution in the manner of thinking about the perspectives and or audience, resulting in better product.

I should be hired for the health care administration position because I am a skilled and fast learner, and willing to advance my knowledge and career at all expense. I have wanted to work for a high profile company since I was able to work. I am a dependable and hard-working person, with the advantage to wanting to excel in everything I do. I have never been a quitter, while I always look for ways to learn new things. I am a dedicated person to the things that require in my life my full work potential. I am an great communicator, excellent customer server, and have a heart to help the and please any person in need of help.
My education has helped me prepare for my career by implementing all the knowledge and education that I need to be successful in my job. I started from my high school graduation from Flint Southwestern Academy, to the University of Michigan Flint. From there, I now attend Davenport University. From pre-requisite classes to all the courses needed to my degree, I have all that I need to use and implement for my career. My teachers, tutors, and mentors have also helped me gain the knowledge, confidence, skills and strategy that I will need to prepare for my career. Without all of my education and knowledge to be a health care administrator, I would not be able to efficiently conduct business with society.
I have once in my lifetime been in a conflict with my former boss from Save A Lot back in 2007. How it resolved was by him and me going into a critical thinking meeting after work hours, to implement with each other on how to come about when handling rude customers and staff. He and I always would agree to disagree on certain issues and situations of life. This particular day, we had a conflict about who said what between the customer and I. No tape or records could show the truth, so it was a he-say, she-say ordeal. My case was proven not guilty because he seemed to figure that I really wanted my job and had no reason to lie about the situation. Under full understanding, the conflict was resolved. Soon after, I was rewarded Most Improved Cashier of the month award, October 2007.
I am a team player because the services, abilities and talents that I implement and device in a team, always is proven to be successful. When a team is joined, every person that consists of that team is considered to contribute and provide some type of implementation in to the team. If a person sat out of a team game every time there was a game, they would not be considered a team player. If a nurse did not do anything at work during her whole shift and left everything for the other nurses to do, she would not be considered a team player because of her actions. I am a team player because I have always and will always choose to put my contribution into whatever team I am on and with.

MY CLASS INTRO

My name is Ayana Aubrey Boone and I was born on January 30, 1990. Aquarius is my zodiac sign, which illuminates my personality a whole lot. Not saying that astrology is what I live by; but more that the scientific evidence and breakdown of the matter is likely true. Aquarians fall into two principle types: one shy, sensitive, gentle and patient; the other exuberant, lively and exhibitionist. Both types are strong willed and forceful in their different ways and have strong convictions, though as they seek truth above all things, we are usually honest enough to change our opinions, however firmly held, if evidence comes to light which persuades them that they have been mistaken. We have a breadth of vision that brings diverse factors into a whole, and can see both sides of an argument without shillyshallying as to which side to take. Consequently, I am unprejudiced and tolerant of other points of view. Aquarians are quick, active and persevering without being self-assertive, and express ourselves with reason, moderation and sometimes, a dry humor. My ambition as a 22year old young African-American woman from Flint, MI is to be successful.  I want to be all that I can be. My drive has always been since I was a young teen to just getting out of the ghetto. As I grow and mature continually, I realize that I want to make a change in the lives of people who grew up like I did. I realized that the world everyone lives in is full of strife, madness and confusion. I sit back time to time and think about how I could make life better for me and future generations. I come to the realization that ‘we’ the people and community have the power and ability to change the world. One home, community, district, city, state, country at a time; the world can be a better place. Now I just happen to be the sensitive type to almost everything I see and hear. All the unmoral judging and decision making in the health care area is a big concern and matter for me. This is one main reason why I am studying and majoring to be a health care administrator. I have come thus far as to my graduation, and don’t plan on stopping there. Once I graduate in two years with my Bachelors for health care administration, I will stay in school for another year towards my master’s degree. I want to make a strong and clear change starting with my community’s health care plans, and then furthering the change all around my state, then country. Technical communication is the exchange of information that helps people interact with technology and solve complex problems. In our daily lives we use technical communication without even being aware. This is important in my career field because I will always be communicating to different audiences and people for various reasons all the time to ensure the satisfactory and orderly conduct of the business. Whether through digital or human communication, all technical interaction and communications must and will be efficient and understood. I am not where in life I want to be, but I am where I didn't have to be.
